My affinity for bladed weapons doesn't cross too far into the realm of military tactics, but from what I understand, it WAS used... rather sparingly. It was most useful against certain tight formations, especially against those using pikes (knocking them aside, or breaking off the ends, then swinging/slashing/stabbing) and for disrupting formations in general. But as I said, it is supposedly surprisingly agile, so it could be used in close-quarters as well.
The flame-blade aspect is the one that makes it
more ceremonial (or at least decorative), but that still has combat applications as well.
