That's a common misconception.

Most two-handed greatswords (like Mortighull is using) were less than ten lbs.

Shhhhh. Don't ruin it for me.

There will be an sdcc exclusive puzzle with Shard and Death on it.
According to their Facebook people, there will be a chance for us no-goers to order one.

What do I know. I suppose it could be weighed down with the souls of 10,000 men...

I mean I'm not a sword person or anything but I believe they carried large swords on their shoulders and when using them they'd have them off to their sides. And if they were to grab it like that isn't that what the enlarged guard would be for? Not whatever that part he's holding onto that's past the guard but not really the blade ;p

this doesn't look quite as thin or flimsy as most swords of that size :P

There are many different stances, or guard positions. Mortighull is holding it (a two-handed flambard) in one such position.

The portion above the hilt is the ricasso. That just refers to an unsharpened portion of the blade above the crossguard, but on more substantial two-handed greatswords like Mortighull's, it is also known as a 'false-grip'. Gripping it in this way allows more control in close-quarters.

That seems unwieldy :P Were they ever actually used or just ceremonial?

My affinity for bladed weapons doesn't cross too far into the realm of military tactics, but from what I understand, it WAS used... rather sparingly. It was most useful against certain tight formations, especially against those using pikes (knocking them aside, or breaking off the ends, then swinging/slashing/stabbing) and for disrupting formations in general. But as I said, it is supposedly surprisingly agile, so it could be used in close-quarters as well.

The flame-blade aspect is the one that makes it more ceremonial (or at least decorative), but that still has combat applications as well.
