Has Streep won before? The woman's more than deserving.
Hollywood has a habit of "making the rounds" with awards. People who have been at the game for years are usually given one eventually, out of respect...even if someone else deserves it more that year (usually an older actor gets it over the younger "deserving" actor, with the assumption the younger one will be up for noms again soon enough). S'probably something you're aware of already, but.. yeah.. it's a bit of highway robbery.
I don't think I watched any "artistic" films that came out last year... well, Drive, maybe.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes. 10/10
I saw this when it was in the theater and loved it. Tonight I finally got around to watching my BD. STILL LOVE IT!

Nominated 17 times since 1979, won twice already.

GROSSLY overrated, very much deserves Best Screenplay though.

Ah, Rod, you and I are not seeing eye to eye on movies lately (Drive and The Artist).
Bejo is actually nominated for Best Supporting Actress, but I think Octavia Spencer for The Help will win that one. I do hope Jean Dejudarin beats Clooney for Actor though.
I'm still miffed Girl With the Dragon Tattoo wasn't nominated for Best Picture and espcially best Director. Fincher is due.

She's won for Kramer vs Kramer and Sophie's Choice.

You're right mate, I've noticed too!
I just saw Bejo was nominated for Supporting, but to me that was far more than a supporting role. I saw it as a shared lead role, and would go as far as to say she stole the movie... she was just fantastic.

Probably has a better chance of supporting nod. Was Fincher nominated? He is turning into the Scorsese of his time.

He really is R. He missed out yet AGAIN
Although that said, you can bet your house on Scorsese getting his second for Hugo this year

The Tree of Life
I didn't finish watching it but from what I saw, it was definitely not my cup of tea.
