I personally don't see Joss Whedon coming over to do this, he's in the Marvel wheelhouse and despite being capable I don't see him working on another big franchise like this. Same goes for Spielberg, he's always said he wanted to do a SW film, but I think that time has come and gone he's a different type of filmmaker now. All the A-Listers are most likely not jumping on this, you will most likely see someone capable who hasn't been identified with this type of film. Look at the Harry Potter franchise to see what I'm talking about. David Yates who's been mentioned is a great example although I'm not saying he will or should do it. Alfonso Cuaron had not done a film like that before, and most still say his was the best in the series. I think those types of directors are who will most likely end up doing these films. Time will tell, and it will tell sooner than later if they plan on sticking to the 2015 release date.

I don't think Disney would handle the project to some unknown or lesser known director.

Well, Gore Verbinski was not the most well known director before they gave him POTC, and Joseph Kosinski hadn't really done anything before they gave him Tron: Legacy so we don't know what they'll do. Granted, neither of the films I mentioned are Star Wars so, who knows.

Having said all this, I don't think Disney will have a ton of say about this, because if I understand correctly, Lucasfilm will continue to run as its own entity under the Disney umbrella like Marvel, Pixar etc. They seem to buy these companies because they're good at what they do, not to take them over and Disneyfy them.

Anyway, that's just my opinion.

Compared to POTC and Tron, Star Wars is a whole different ball game. Considering how established and how gigantic the franchise is Disney wouldn't leave it to chance. Especially with so many skeptical voices around.

I would like to see Spieldberg have his shot. I think honourable mention should be given to J.J.Abrams, but he may be too busy with Star Trek.

Christopher Nolan would be a great choice too.

After the last 3 films, I have no more interest in Star Wars regardless of who's behind the directorial helm.

So you won't see the new movie even if it gets great reviews.
