does anyone know if those 1/4 figure will be able to stand on their own or does it also have the same ugly cup holder to make them stand in place like a cripple?

Yup, they can stand up by itself. Picture by Alaneye:
And the metal leg support is very discrete(unlike most 1/6 figures), so very easy to "hide" in case you want to use the support.
