Sideshow Collectibles R2-D2 Deluxe 1/6 scale (2017): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCZaT_hKs2g

A short video. In this video we take a look at the Sideshow 1/6 scale R2-D2 from Star Wars - Flashing Light in Action, filmed using an iPhone. I made this video for a bit of fun. It runs for just 28 seconds, and does that it says on the tin, show R2's lights flashing

Who does that voice belong to in the background?
I believe it is Sideshow Susan talking about Darth Vader's lights.

Have to admit. This looks kinda cool.
That's cool. I think I will get him. I preordered HT's BB8 and BB9E so this will be a great companion to them.

Thanks for posting.

Overall I was happy w this piece. Price was good, I like the size and light up. I do agree it feels plastic-Y and it is a shame it doesn't make sounds. All said, he looks great, I just wish he had a base too. PS most of those SS coupons from contest work on this piece.

R2-D2 1/6 Scale

Sideshow vs Hot Toys

Sideshow
Dome - Plastic painted silver. Looks good. There is a seam that lets it down.
Panels - Many of R2’s panels open, which is cool. Some of R2's dome sections open also, which is also cool.
Lights - Yes, and quite nice they are to: https://youtu.be/tCZaT_hKs2g
Sound - No. Too bad.
White - A nice white shade of white.
Blue - All blues areas are represented using a muted blue.
Weathering - There is a hint of weathering that works well.
Weight - Very light. The lack of weight gives a cheap feel.
Extras - Comes with a ton of extra;s including a mini light up Princess Leia
Base - No

Hot Toys
Dome - Shiny metal with added weather effect. Metal is better than plastic. It is possibly too shiny. No visible seam.
Panels - All panels are sealed closed
Lights - Yes. Brighter than the Sideshow R2
Sound - Yes. Good move by Hot Toys
White - Not as white as the Sideshow R2. Some have described the white as cream / bone white.
Blue - Bright blue, brighter than the Sideshow blue. Possibly too bright.
Weathering - Darker compared to the Sideshow effect
Weight - Reported to be heavier than the Sideshow R2
Extra’s - None
Base - No

Both R2-D2’s have their plus and negatives. The Sideshow R2 has the opening panels + extras. The Hot Toys R2 makes sounds. While both R2’s are 1/6 scale, the Hot Toys R2 is slightly taller. The Sideshow R2 dome looks flatter less round than the Hot Toys R2 dome. I’m not sure which one is more correct, but I think the flatter dome looks better. Maybe a combination of the Hot Toys R2 head (with sound) placed on the Sideshow R2 body (with opening panels) would result in the ultimate 1/6 scale R2-D2

There are a number of videos on YouTube that point out much of the above.
Here is one of them: 1/6th Scale R2-D2 Comparison Review - Hot Toys vs Sideshow

(not my video - i picked this video at random)

There's another R2-D2 on the way: (it could be out already)
CHOGOKIN Perfect Model R2-D2 from A New Hope

Height: about 176mm / 6.92"inch
Material: ABS, PVC, Die-cast

It will be interesting the comparison video's to see how he compares. As far as i know, this R2 unit lights up, makes sounds. Unlike other R2 units, Chogokin have added rivets, as they based their R2-D2 on the original drawings It's dome looks similar to the Sideshow R2 dome. I can't see any sign of weathering. The black base looks super cheap, and i would guess most collectors will not use it.

If it's R2-D2 movement you want, this one from Sphero tops the lot. This R2 unit is controlled via a smart phone.

Amazon says chogokin available in Nov.

The hatches open to reveal manipulator arms, it can transform between bipedal and tripedal modes, and eight LEDs illuminate to capture R2-D2's trademark expressions
The plastic and Die cast figure includes a cover for use when in bipedal mode, a stand, and a Droid control bolt
This accurately detailed Die cast figure of the famed Astromech Droid R2-D2 stands 176mm (approx. 7") tall and weighs over 2 lbs!
Product is a special item set that will not be available in Japan and made for the U.S. Market
Product bears official Bluefin Distribution logo

I watched The Empire Strikes Back last-night.
The scene above, one of my favourite R2 moments - R2 on tip-toes looking into Yoda's house.
This got me thinking - can the Sideshow R2-D2 Deluxe perform the same move?

A. No. R2's feet cannot be moved to tilt anywhere close to that (as can be seen in the screen shot).
10° appears to be about the maximum angle of R2-D2 Deluxe

'Recreate all of your favorite movie moments' - Sideshow

Maybe Sideshow should remove 'all' from that
