Stripping statue for repaint

I won a Graphitti Designs BATMAN state on eBay and I plan to do a complete repaint. I have never stripped the paint off of a statue before and I was wondering if chemical strippers will damage the statue? Is there a particular stripper that you would recommend?

The statue that I bought has paint chips on it. At this time I do not know if the chips are from damage or pealing paint due to moisture conditions.

Long as its a pre paint and not a kid, the resin holds up to acetone fine.

like bowen, sideshow, GG, DC stuff works fine in acetone

kits and 2 part resins will get eaten in acetone.

Some people put items into a zip lock bag and spray castrol degreaser and let it sit over night or something. i never did that tho.

I don't think kids hold up to Acetone well.

Thanks for the info.

After Thursday I'll let you know how it works on kids. A few of my cousins are little bastards, and they will be coming to Thanksgiving dinner.

chris....i do not strip the paint at all...i would prob only strip it if.. it would be a conversion and sculpting is required.

what i do is.....

1. a light 600 fin gritt wet sand

2. scrub it clean with warm water, dish soap, and a soft tooth brush. then let dry.

3. then i spray it with primer i use plastikote grey primer..it sprays even and smooth no sanding required..at all.

i did this same thing to your joker that i got from you..i do this on any statues that are.."old school"..like from the late 1990s

the newer statues..i just spray them heavy with testors dull coat and paint over them..i have been doing this style for 8 years...and never had a problem at all.

good luck bro..

........as far about with the chips and paint flakes...then idk...you might have to go the stripping route....then again my boen batman had some flaking in some areas..and i sanded those areas all out and smooth them out....and they were fine....i did repaint my bowen robin and just did the steps i said...but the paint was mint so i did all but prime ...it all depends on the paint job.

its what ever works for you....testors dullcoat is a laquer base the same as primer..and when you lay layers down and seal with dullcoat you are painting over it..so the paint will adhere to it...

all painters will do whats good for them.. good luck
