Sucks.

Unfortunately they've lost about half their viewers from season 3, it's gone from 4.5 million to 2.2 million... I know the series was shielded a bit from the president of Fox network since he really liked the show but the numbers are now in an area where it's on the bubble... If we do get a season 5 it will probably be the last so they can tie up the story lines and have enough episodes for a good syndication run, plus having a complete story arc is a plus selling the complete Blu-ray package.

I'd be good with that.

I will be sad when Gotham gets cancelled. But, you're right, if it has to be then I pray we at least get a full season 5 to tie everything up.

We're talking a conversation with full sentences and proper punctuation here. Again, not sign language or some other established form of communication. It's either that or humans are now capable of telepathic communication in this universe and they forgot to tell us.
That's just one of many examples of this show patronizing it's audience. That coupled with the countless times it manufactures drama for the sake of drama makes any subsequent seasons of this show a hard pass for me.

There was an episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Hush, with a similar gimmick. Demons who were susceptible to human voices made everyone in town mute so communication among the cast had to be achieved through non-verbal means. No subtitles provided then though.

I remember. Whedon did an entire episode with no dialogue and no subtitles. Yet these guys couldn't go 15 seconds without thinking their audience could understand the intricacies of basic hand gestures to communicate "lets move" or "I am hurt".
