I've seen the big-budget Russian movies Night Watch and its sequel Day Watch. I remember the special effects being very good at the time, but the story was super convoluted. I had to watch the first movie twice to understand what was going on.

Those are also the two that come to mind. F/X don't hold up very well and the story was rather poorly written.
It makes me appreciate the work from ILM back here in the states. We've set the bar pretty damn high in terms of talent.
