The novel Raptors were Velociraptor antirrhopus which later on was changed to Deinonychus Antirrhopus, which is about the size of the JP film raptors. Utahraptor is much larger than the film versions but it was used to tie JP to a new find and larger "cooler" species at the time. Feathers weren't really considered much beyond Archeopteryx at the time.

I think they missed a big opportunity with this first island concept. We could have seen novel version dinosaurs, with the forked tongues and all. They even could have borrowed ideas from Kenner , our mutant could have been the Ultimasaurus.
