I like the trailer. Craig is Bond, y’all got what y’all wanted. Looks like a proper Bond flick.
If this is a passing of the torch, which isn’t necessarily indicated in the trailer, it looks like they’re at least taking a story driven approach with Craig still in the lead as James Bond/007 instead of just abruptly forcing Lashana Lynch’s character in the spotlight. The movie still has the typical “Bond Girl” role fulfilled as well.
As 007 is a title, if the title passes, I’m unbothered. To me there’s a difference between a person of color or different sex taking a title or designation, simply a label, vs for example, a man playing Wonder Woman, a character defined by being a “strong” female, or a white person playing a culturally significant character like Black Panther who is partially defined by the fact he’s a black African. In some cases a gender or race swap doesn’t matter if it doesn’t change the character as previously depicted, but in other cases, depending on how defined the character was to begin with, changing gender or race would have to completely change the character’s life experiences, it can’t be simply accomplished. A white Luke Cage or Storm wouldn’t work; a black Steve Rogers wouldn’t work, but an African American Cap can work and has been revisited several times; Miles Morales has had several stories grounded in the fact he’s AA and Hispanic. However, changing 007 to a different character should still leave you with James Bond, a white man, still intact.
Meanwhile, Jane Thor is getting a movie.
