i always assumed that they were the ones that were inspected before mass production but after reading about them on the forum i have no idea what they are.

Actually that is originally what artists proofs were. The production techniques used to not be nearly as advanced as now and a small run of artists proofs were done verify details, paint, etc before the final production run. The term artists proofs has also been used in reference at times to the masters that are used as a guide for painting the production run, although I think there is actually another term given to these.

Now-a-days, some companies to have an additional number in the run that are considered artists proofs and are used for promotional purposes, VIP percs, and to replace damaged pieces (SS does this). Other companies use them sort of like an exclusive and sell them as an alternative to the standard run. This is what HH does with their Marvel line.

That's my understanding anyway

Differant companies do there AP's differantly..

HH will have 100 AP's and 1000 regular numbered.. "Normally"

Bowen will run off around 25 extra or more.. and use some as replacements for damaged..

Clay seems to like to Alter his AP's to some extent.. Of the three mentioned I like clays approach but to me its really More of a varient..

hope this helps
