Painting "Battle Damage"

I've always wondered: How do you paint battle damage on a human character?

I picked up an excellent Captain America for dirt cheap because it has some nicks and chips, which I immediately realized could double as battle damage... if I actually knew the best way to do battle damage.

So my questions:

1) How do you suggest creating the illusion/painting torn fabric/flesh?

2) How do you suggest creating the illusion/painting torn fabric with armor beneath?

3) How do you suggest painting denting and bullet scorching on armor?

Any and all advice will be appreciated!

The only one I can chime in on now is the dents, dents are achieved with shadow and highlight, figure out were your light source will be, and shape of dent, you will have a darker shadow value in the top half of the dent, gradiate out to highlight with lighter value of the color you are painting the dent on.
Heres a very quick, very poor example done in photoshop,

Here is an old texture map from a 3D gun I made for a game, you can see how must raised ridges and indentions in the mag are done with light and dark values,

And the 3D model,

This was for a low poly game so most details had to be done in photoshop. hope this helps!

Thanks so much for this! Now that you've explained it, it makes perfect sense. Don't know if I mentioned this in my post, but it's one of the Captain America fine art statues, so the examples you gave are pretty spot on.

Of course, I just got the statue in hand today and found (for some reason) the white paint in the statue is cracking, which I've never seen, but will hopefully be a simple sanding and repaint on those sections.

But, again - Thank you! I at least have a place to start now
