So is "toxicity " from baking a fable?

Will my apple pie baked in the same oven hurt me?

I have not been convinced one way or another yet.
Im no scoentist, nor an expert, but I've read the same thing from various sites, that the sculpey compound only creates the HCL fumes when baked at temperatures over 300-350.

Anyone baking, should be baking, according to the producers of sculpey, and almost all of the sculptors, at 200-225.

This appears to be well within the safe parameters.

And let's be honest walk outside in any major city and you will be breathing far worse fumes into your lungs.

If you are that freaked about it, boil it in a stock pot. Same effect. No fumes.

Yeah i use our oven for baking sculpey AND food, never had a problem. Its a fan oven...

I normally bake a sculpt for about 4 - 6 hours depending on how big it is, then i turn the oven off and let the piece cool over night in it. Next morning i remove the piece, turn the fan on without heat and with the door open to air-out the oven for about 5 - 10 minutes!! Never had a crack or a problem with toxic fumes.

Thanks Ged. This has been my experience and process as well. How does your apple pie taste?

I switch up baking sculpey and food a lot, and I feel **cough cough** pretty good.

In all seriousness, totally non toxic, just run you're oven hot for a 1/2 hour or so after you take the piece out and it should burn off the residual odor.

I noticed or think I have noticed that our oven vents via the back left stove top burner... can any one confirm this is a standard or the like?

anyway I am considering creating a vented tube with fans to pull the sculpey fumes over to a window my last bake of a rather large piece about kicked us out of the house

i imagine a dryer vent tubing and small fans... thoughts?

I used to bake my sculpey but the fumes were always a problem. Now I only boild my pieces, you get a solid even cure to the sculpey, no singe marks and best of all,,,,,,,,,NO FUMES!

If you are working with larger pieces plus armatures and support poles and wooden bases, how do you boil? Especially if they need to stay on said supports till finished?
