It's really about time management.

If you know what your material will do over a period of time, you know that you have certain windows of opportunity to do what you want to do with it.

For example.

if I want to get something to a general shape, or coat an armature, I mix, and immediately apply, smooth, and allow to cure. If I want it to cure faster, put it in the oven for about 10 minutes at 150 degrees.

If I want to sculpt detail, then I allow it to sit for 30 minutes before I work it. I give my tools a coating of either PAM, or the safety solvent. Sometimes I use water.

Sometimes I use plastic wrap, it really depends on what I want to do with the stuff. Mostly I apply and smooth to shape. Once you know what the medium will do, you can pretty well do anything with it you choose. It's made me a faster sculptor that's for sure.
