statue pic's

Hi folks, wondering if you camera veterans can give me some pointers...I got a canon powershot a630, about 4-5 years old. It takes fantastic pictures but I have trouble shooting pic's of my statues without the colors getting "washed out". I don't use the flash, and the colors are still too bright and don't show depth. I'm assuming my lighting is just not right. I've experimented but can't get good results. Is there a specific type of lighting that will help bring out the colors?...or is it the camera...or combination of camera and lighting. Greatly appreciate any advise out there.

Perhaps you should manually increase the shutter speed to under exposure the picture.
