Sketches are the exception, more often than not. It usually depends on how long his signing line is at any particular moment. Prices can vary, usually starting at 150-200 dollars, at least that's been my experience.

is it worth it to head to his table early on saturday (or first thing) - or is it just a hit or miss thing, meaning I could end up being 10th in line and get nada?

The way he's done it the last few conventions is that if you buy his art pack (sketchbook, calendar, Monster Green book, and print) for $80, you get a lottery ticket. Each day he draws one lottery ticket for a sketch.
