I still find it comical how people let "expectations" effect their enjoyment of a film. For me I either enjoy it or I don't based on my personal tastes. Opinions and hype going in don't influence my take.

Agreed. I don't understand this behavior at all.

I disagree with you here to a point. Hype effects us whether we want it to or not,. Whether we know it or not. It's not a choice we make to ignore all outside influence. It's going to creep in to some degree. Saying it has no impact on you is a little naive IMO. With all due respect. I completely agree that some let it effect them more than others, but we all feel it. Unless you live in cave without internet, it's unavoidable.

Personally, hype can make me very excited going into a film, but ultimately it's the film that disappoints me, not the fact that I was very excited for it going in.

If you thoughly enjoyed a movie but recognize the flaws and still love it despite the flaws, that doesn't make you a fanboy.
The fanboys I am referring are those who call Del Toro a genius (I don't think he has enough of track record yet) and who define Pac Rim as the pefect scifi film. With all the hype I went into watching Pac Rim with high expectations. Bad move on my part and I wish I was able to avoid the hype and watch it with no expectations.. But the directing, story and the acting was flat for me. Sure the jaeger/kaiju fights were fun and were the best part of the movie. I had the same issues with Avatar and Sucker Punch. Both of those looked beautiful and had great action sequences but the story was weak on those too.

Thing is, there isn't always agreement on those "flaws".

I disagree. I recognize when hype may potentially play a part in my enjoyment of a film, and I have no problem acknowledging it and removing it from my final opinion of that movie. Hype may affect that first viewing experience to a degree, but I always recognize and ultimately know that it should have no bearing on what was actually accomplished in the film in front of me. It is an outside element that the film makers have no say over, and it isn't fair to them or yourself to let it play a part in your final judgement of their creation. If for some reason the hype is that bad, I will simply wait until I see the movie a second time before I decide how much I thought it succeeded or how much I actually enjoyed it. However, it rarely ever comes to that for me.

An excellent point. Just because one person deems something a flaw, it doesn't factually make it so.

Yep, the hype of Pacific Rim from this forum is what led me to decide to go and to spend the bucks for the IMAX 3D, and yep the film disappointed me. 2 hours and $16 I'll never get back.

agreed. expectations and hype can definitely impact your interest level and ultimately level of enjoyment on something. i've seen several overhyped and overrated movies and have come out even more let down than i probably normally would have had it not been for the hype / ratings.

Well, allowing hype to dictate what choices you make can certainly get expensive. I only allow hype to elevate my level of excitement for a film, I rarely go see a film just based on hype. If I do happen to see something based only on hype then I am well aware what the risks are.
