I remember doing that as a teenager and now I think back and wonder how awkward that must of been for everyone around us.

I've never had a problem being "intimate" in public with my girlfriends or my wife; you gauge the "level" of intimacy with the type of event/type of people you're surrounded by.
I'm not some insensitive s.o.b. either, so if being overly intimate would generally be seen as inappropriate in a given setting, I'd respect that and refrain.
Holding you significant other's hand long enough to get him/her back to your car/hotel room/house/cardboard box by the dumpster where you can consummate your relationship should always be option #1. "When in doubt, whip it out" doesn't always apply (though it should).

Keep your "thunder-clapping" in the bedroom.

Where are the pictures ???
My wife and I are somewhere in the middle. No problem with public affection at all, but no where near the "get a room" stage

I think, and I can only assume, that for the most part stuff Hawkeye says is in jest.
I tease my fiancee relentlessly and we have a great realtionship with each other.
Personally, me and Vicki will hold hands if we're out in the street, but I wouldn't do anything other than a quick hug, or peck type kiss. Anything more is personal and I wouldn't want to subject/show people that.
