Girls volleyball: here is the story so far!
This weekend, there was a girls volleyball tournament. These games DO NOT count in the standings. I know of a coach that took his team, but they were over matched in every game. They got blown out by scores like 25-4, etc.....They went for experience. The coach knew this but did not tell the team. On day one, the team had a meltdown (they quit on the court, no energy, accused the coach of NOT trying to win, etc) because they got blown out in every game AND the coach gave all the junior players time on the court. The coach really let the team have it after. There was a chance that some of the girls might not show up the next day. They all did! Its was a miracle!
One of the girls said that this philosophy of giving the second stringers and juniors playing time is bringing down the team. Then this same girl was caught texting to friends during a game on the bench. The coach let her have it as the game was ongoing.
Now they have a game this week. As motivation, the coach told his team that their opponent thinks they are a bunch of quitters. He said some fans from their opponent this week were watching them and came to this conclusion. He told them that they are going to come out and try to get a quick lead. So they better play with fire. He said that his team has the advantage because they have the opportunity to really shock the other team if they play with intensity.
Now after some time had passed, the some of the seniors came to the coach and requested extra practice time. That is exactly what the coach wanted to see. Now they can work on specialization of their positions.
He wanted to see the senior players use this adversity as motivation to improve. The teams they faced at this tournament are not in their league. So that level of skill and intensity is not what they will face. The reasoning is it should make the teams they face in THEIR league easier to handle.
What do you think?
The coach is also taking the juniors to play other junior teams in an effort to build for the future.
*** This is just another series in dramatic episodes this year. AT the start of the year, some senior girls had fits because the coach CUT their friends from the team (grade 9 girls) and put on some junior "prospects" in hopes of building for the future.
