spot rescue device
http://findmespot.com/en/index.php?cid=102
nice piece of equipment. cost is $150 plus $120 per year of service.
might be nice for hikers or runners. i don't really see the need as a diver unless you hvae your own boat. in southern cali there is always a lifeguard around or i am on a dive boat

Nice but i'd rather people not know where I am.
Those football players that died on that boat could have used this device.

In the beginning of the year 20/20 had a story about those thing's. A lot of false alarms and idiots that have no buisiness hiking.
Two that i remember:
One guy did'nt have a singal on his cell, so he hit the rescue button because he drank salty water.
A father and son could not find the way back to their car and the father contacted rescue so they can fly them back to the car.

well i am sure it is just like calling 911 when you don't need it. fines and possible jail time for to many uses.
oops guess i am wrong about the fines but they will come if this catches on. it is new so a learnign curve is needed
if having something like this gets lazy or scarred people off there couches and into hiking, etc then it is worth every false alarm.

all the problems mentioned in the article are very easy fixes.
how about the thing wont work without a code you get after you register it. one of the most common thing in electronics today.
how about a test during registration. that way people know you a read the manual or skimmed it for info.

There's going to be a lot of "false/ignorant/lazy alarms", with this.. for sure; as you guys pointed out.
....pulling rescue teams away from actual crises. A great device, but... yeargh.

Pretty cool but I do agree with some testing and fines/penalties, it is a great thing. If there were to be a $100 service charge to use, I'd be very selective when to use it and wouldn't mind paying it if I were to be in dire straits.
