I understood that the name was changed for the following reason:
"Slag's name is also a popular Cybertronian expletive. That just seems right, for some reason. In The Real World, Slag is also a term of abuse in the United Kingdom and some parts of Europe, which has forced Hasbro to release toys (such as an Animated toy designed with G1 Slag in mind) under the name Snarl in recent years to avoid possible problems with cultural sensitivities. It is also the reason why Slag is referred to now as Slug in Fall of Cybertron. The original Snarl has yet to comment on the matter."
