United Nations service is always a possibility, but right now the major operations in terms of commitment of personnel are;
1. Security for the Vancouver games,
2. Afghanistan with NATO,
3. and the new mission in Haiti.
I had the opportunity to serve on a United Nations mission in Bosnia-Herzgovenia in 1993.

A good friend of mine was in Bosnia at that time. Tough place to be.

It would replace my current contract. I'd be looking at 3-6 months in Haiti.
Right now a lot of people are volunteering to go to Haiti, so my chances of getting the position are slim, at least, until more positions eventually become available.

The job market in Montreal isn't too bad. Unemployment rate is currently at about 9.1%.
There are always other options. My personal situation makes joining the Regular Force a little difficult. I'd have to have an older sister placed before I could consider it. She would be very resistant to the idea.
Civilian jobs that I could do wouldn't pay what I'm making in the military, at least, not starting out. While this in and of itself is not a big issue, my needs are fairly modest, I've been out of the job market essentially for the last 10 years or so.
Retraining or going back to school might be interesting. I would like to finish off that Marketing degree I let slide or maybe just study something else entirely.

Tet, since you're technically still a civil servant, you might want to look into getting a position with service Canada. The benefits are amazing and the pay is pretty decent too.
