Typically, Canadian Forces reservists are offered about 4 or 5 days of pay per month spread across 4 half-days (2) and one or two weekends. In addition, we get to be nominated on temporary full-time taskings or courses over the summer that can range from 4 to 16 weeks of employment. However, the current budgetary changes bring even part-time employment levels into question.
The reserve units have always been structured to provide part-time employment, where any full-time positions are meant to be staffed by the Regular Force. However, there has never been enough available Reg Force personnel to cover every position, so these unfilled positions then become offered to reservists on yearly contracts.
IMO the current financial situation boils down to this;
The CF has spent a lot of money for major international and domestic operations over the last years, as well as on a much needed modernization in terms of vehicles and equipment. Now we need to pay for it all.

While this is nothing new, it is however the most dramatic shift during my 20 years of professional experience. Its not like they slowed down spending, they slammed on the breaks. I fully expect opportunities to return to last year levels, but not for a couple of years or until the next major international operation.
