I went to a general store. They wouldn't let me buy anything specifically.

Can I bum a f a g?

That means "Can I borrow a cigarette". Funny how we speak the same language, yet that sentence could get me in lots of trouble your side of the pond!

To quote George Bernard Shaw: ""The United States and Great Britain are two countries divided by a common language."

When I was visiting some freinds in PR, we were walking on a street and all of a sudden we were surrounded by this swarm of little knats ... of course I yelled out:

"De donde carajo salieron todos estos bichos!"

Translated to english "where the hell did all these bugs come from?"

Well little did I know that in PR the word "bichos" which to me means "bugs" to them means "cu*t" ... my freinds mother and grand-mother looked at me like they wanted to wash my mouth out with soap ... it wasn't until Zoriya told me what it meant that I understood what I said wasn't what they understood.

I myself being a gringo have had problems with the translations for my guys in the Kitchen....we have a predominately Mexican BOH and they thought it was great that I kept getting juevos and javes (sp?) mixed up....so I would ask a donde es mi juevos???? they laughed themselves silly 'til I learned the difference of course now it is another matter....I found them
