I am by no means an expert. But I've been doing a lot of research on that too.

There's a TON of products to consider. Even within a specific company.

My advice? People seem to favor the company Smooth-On. They have soooo many products, it's not even funny. I recommend you email them and give them the specifics of the type of molding and casting you're looking for, what type of equipment you have (some need precise measurements, thus you'll need a digital scale), whether you need purable or brushable, etc. They can recommend one of their products to you.

That said, I think probably platinum based silicone rubber would be good for you. Probably Mold Star (doesn't require scale as it's 1:1 based on volume) would be the easiest and most versatile to use.

check youtube. Theres a lot of video tutorials for various methods and materials. Look for John Diaz's vids. I'm pretty much ready to do the same as you and am looking at G1000 from Silicones Inc. Looks pretty straight forward. He shows you how.

Novice here again !

Just this week i've attempted my first mold using plaster of paris and the results arent promising.

The two halves seperated easily, but it was really difficult to remove the sculpt each time dispite using releasing agent. The second half cracked so its been epoxy'd. Im not sure its captured all the detail but I will give it a go.

Learning curve and all that.

Glad I read this thread, will be checking out youtube for silicone.

You need a flexible mould (eg. silicoln) if your making cast parts in a rigid material ie resin etc. a rigid mould will never work with a rigid material.

After seeing a couple of videos on youtube I'm now in process of making an adjustable mold box for using pouring silicone, devilishly simple.

Will be looking at the paint on silicone and glass fibre resin technique also.

Learning curve is there to be flattened !
