Do you prefer Batman as a loner
or teamed up with the boy wonder?

I always enjoyed Bats more sans The boy hostage.

He needs a sidekick for his darkness and brooding to contrast off someone.

I don't mind him with a partner. But I do prefer it when Bats and Robin/Nightwing/Batgirl are just out on patroll at 2am, when trouble finds them.
I like gritty, urban Batman stories. Don't care much when he's with the League fighting Aliens or robots on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

He always has Alfred.
I found that enough for me.
But a decent story with Robin isn't bad and of course Robin is unavoidable if you read comics.
I just think if most fans ever actually picture themselves as Bats beating down criminals, Robin at their side is not part of it.

Tim Drake is great. I like the dynamic that Batman and Robin have together, it's worked for so long now.
Although I need to have a fix of Batman only stories too!

I prefer Batman alone, with Robin (Nightwing, whatever) available to help out when necessary. The dynamic of D!ck Grayson being off at college back in the Neal Adams days was my favorite period of Bat-story. Or at least one of them.
I do think Batman is surrounded by support staff at this point. It gets ridiculous.

Columbo never needed support, right?

Exactly my point. Once again Jess, you've crystalized by thoughts eloquently.
