There is no right or wrong way to answer this question because it comes down to choice. There are numerous fellows on CAF, for example, who only buy superhero erotica, which to me could not be further down the list of what interests me, but hey, to each their own. In the end, if everyone collected the same way, one could only imagine what prices for artwork would be like....

Agreed. I did not take your post as an affront to the way I collect. I wanted to throw it out there that as passionate as one individual might be about the specifics (what/how/frequency/volume/etc.) of their collection may be, there are infinite ways to build a collection and only each individual can say what works for them. A point that is especially relevant in a basics of collecting type thread.
