Exactly. But Sauron was...

Maiar, almost certainly. And Gandalf and Sauron are the leading candidates.

I just see more evidence for it being Sauron, right now. They're obviously trying to keep you guessing at the moment.

To shed light on my thinking:

Case for Gandalf:
-He looks the part (old, bearded man)
-Found by Hobbit ancestors

Case for Sauron:
-Fire and meteor crater NOT hot to the touch, calling back to Galadriel finding Sauron's sigil in fortress, and claiming their fire does not give off heat due to such an evil presence
-While he looked like a normal 'man' size to me, the Harfoot described him as bigger than a man. Gandalf was normal man height or shorter, but Sauron is typically larger.
-He communicated with the fireflies, then they died. That doesn't seem like a benevolent spirit to me. But Sauron is known to corrupt what he encounters.
-The strength of his yell seemed too powerful and potentially malevolent to be from Gandalf. At least, Gandalf the Grey. Gandalf the White, maybe.
-Gandalf isn't supposed to arrive until the Third Age, but, Sauron is present in the Second Age.

maybe i'm misremembering, but i could've sworn he had never heard of Hobbits or the shire until they captured Gollum

You could be right. I don't recall.

But it wouldn't be the first time Tolkien relied on technicality. e.g. "No man can kill me." -WitchKing

Harfoots and Hobbits and the other two types of Hobbits could throw him off.

Also, we'll see how much longer the stranger remains where he is... Because, at this point, he still seems disoriented. He could leave the Harfoots before coming to his senses fully, and not remember them well - if he is indeed Sauron.

I thought the intro showed that Sauron already exists at this time...he was seen standing before a legion of orcs. Galadriel narrates "a cunning and cruel sorcerer, they called him Sauron. My brother vowed to seek him out and destroy him, but Sauron found him first." Sauron marked his flesh with that symbol, and then we pick up in the present with Galadriel's team of hunters trying to find him in Forodwaith...unless I'm missing a time jump backwards.

Sauron does exist during these events in the second age, he was the most trusted of those that served Melkor/Morgoth in the great War of the Powers during the first age.

I'm not sure about spoilers...but if you've watched or read Lord of the Rings, Sauron is focus of that, including his backstory.

Yeah, I'm just wondering why the meteor man is being thought of as possibly being Sauron in this discussion, it seems clear that he is not. Being a Maiar seems most plausible to me.

There has been speculation online that he could be Sauron in the guise of Annatar. The form he befriended the Elf craftsmen and encouraged them to forge the rings of power.
