Not sure if serious. It's one of the highest-grossing film franchises of all time. Even the "weaker" films in the series perform fantastically.

The movies are old enough now for people to have nostalgia over the first one. The people who saw it when they were younger are now old enough to afford something like this. Seems like a good time to do it honestly.
