request for pointers

I bought this kit and I've already prepped it for painting. I have an airbrush with a good compressor. I've done brush painting and have a reasonably good grasp of things like blending, but the airbrush thing is new to me. I've already tried it on one project and the colors came out weird on the piece even though they seemed to work together before application.

Anyway here's the kit - the one on the right is what I have now (in pieces) and the one on the left is more or less what I would like it to look like when I'm finished. I have some beginning ideas, but I would really appreciate some tips or pointers if there's anyone who wouldn't mind sparing me the time.

It looks like I should prime with a clear and use the color of the pieces as base and just do highlighting/shading, yes/no? How do I go about making sure I've got the right color before I mix tons of it and spray it on the piece?

Sorry for all the n00bishness. Thanks for reading.
