Its really not that confusing. Superman and Wonder Woman are perfect examples as the regular editions for both of those statues had really large edition sizes and both went to "wait list" on multiple occassions as its all based on batches and not the total edition size.
Hypothetically speaking, lets say Sideshow made Wonder Woman or Superman in 1000 piece batches. They open up orders and when they reach 1000 orders, they put it on wait list. Once those statues are all officially paid for and sold, they open up orders again for the next batch. That goes on until the final batch of statues get sold, at which point the wait list gets replaced with "sold out". The only thing people don't know is what batch Sideshow is on for a given piece so with pieces that have larger edition sizes, you really don't know if a statue on "wait list" will open back up for orders again or if Sideshow is on the final batch and that "wait list" will turn to "sold out" once those pieces are sold.
