Ralph Reese drew for both Warren & Skywald as well as more traditional venues. I can't help but compare his style to the underground comics that were being published during the 1970's; kind of a gonzo, anti-establishment vibe going on. Love it!

From the early to mid 70's a publishing company by the name of Eerie published their own brand of b&w horror magazines. Their interiors, but especially their covers blew the doors off their competition but only in terms of graphic violence. I don't recall ever seeing an Eerie mag. on the racks back in the day. The shop keepers must have hid them. Carl Burgos, creator of the original Human Torch, & longtime Atlas artist & writer, drew for them for a while -

The cover artists who drew for Eerie publications are too numerous to name. Still, there was a thread of commonality in their work. Rather than continue to explore individual artists for Eerie publ. I'm going to devote a little space to just their cover art -

Apparently, & I've seen this as fact. The folks at Eerie publications didn't really want to pay writers for new stories. They solved that problem by talking many of the pre-code horror stories (shown in the beginning of this thread) & just had their artists re-do the old stories with new art. No one ever said anything.

Quick tip #5 - In the Gwandanaland reprint trades of the Eerie mags, they will credit the original writer of the tale at the bottom of page one.

Let's roll over to the AMAZING B&W mags. that Marvel/Curtis were producing in the 70's. No code, beautiful & horrific tales, top notch art!

Spanish Artist, Esteban Maroto was one of the great ones, providing Curtis & Warren with both beautiful covers & panels. He could really draw women. (It was Maroto who designed Red Sonja's metal bikini in an early issue of Savage Tales) -

Bob Larkin - One of my absolute favorites! Bob Larken's Curtis & Warren magazine covers are some of the best. His cover for the Vampire Tales Annual is another in my top 3! I have it framed & hanging in my basement bar. If you passed a Larkin' cover on the racks back in the 70's, you stopped. He drew/draws a lot more than horror. His Rampaging Hulk, Doc Savage & Star Lord mag. covers were automatic buys for me back in the day.

Quick tip 6 - Marvel reprinted all of the Curtis' Vampire Tales mags. in 3 nifty little volumes 10 years ago. You can still find them & Amazon offers them all for kindle. Complete with letters & articles. Your lcs may still have these.
