The Exorcism of Emily Rose comes pretty close to the original Exorcist for scaryness.

The only movie that has ever freaked me out. Very, very disturbing ... but I love it.

Yet another you may not have checked out.
Monster Movie Special Effects Master, Tom Savini
Directed a Night of the Living Dead Remake. It holds up well. Pretty faithful to the original with an altered take on the ending. Great Zombies.

Since we're only talking about the more obscure films I would like to suggest "Burnt Offerings" (1970's Karen Black & Bette Davis), and "Dead and Buried" from 1981.

The whole point of this one being made was because the rights to the original are in public domain due to the copyright accidentally being left out of the credits in the original.

I agree though it is as good as the original, but that was because Romero was the Executive Producer guiding Savini through it.

I just saw Burnt Offerings for the 1st time. Scary and very much in the tradition of my 1st 3 pics. Oliver Reed was in his 70's prime for that one. The movie held up pretty well. Great recommendations!
