This past March I turned 50 years old, while that might not sound like much, I'm the first male on my fathers side of the family to accomplish that feat in 4 generations. My father died at 49, my grand-father at 42, and my great-grandfather at 46, all from heart disease and diabetes.
So, I decided it was high time I started taking control of my life, and to that end I excommunicated
A LOT of toxic things from my life, including some of my immediate relatives ... notice I don't call them family, because being related by blood doesn't necessarily mean that one is family. You can't help who you're related to when you're born, but
Family (in my eyes) has to be earned.
Anyway, this February I started making a series of drastic changes, I started watching what I ate and started exercising more. I took up biking again, something I had love to do, but hadn't done in a long time. In May of this year, I entered into an event called "The SMART Ride", a 165 mile ride from Miami to Key West which raises funds for local South Florida hiv/aids Charities. While this was for a great cause, it was also more importantly a personal goal for me. I've been training for it for months ... and this weekend,
I DID IT!!!
I pedaled my now slightly less fat ass, 165 miles from Miami all the way down to Key West!
The moral of this story ... don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't make a positive change late in life, cause I'm here to tell you that you can do anything you set your mind to ... even at 50, and even if you're not in the best health.
Thanks to these changes, I've lost over 30 lbs., I'm now off of 3 out of 4 diabetes medications (the 4th will be gone before the year is out), my blood pressure and cholesterol meds are history, and I'm healthier than I've probably ever been.
If I can do it, anyone can do it!!
