In its E3 2013 Media Briefing, Sony announced that the PlayStation 4 will support used games. Additionally, the system won't require any sort of online authentication for disc-based games.

Sony also announced that trading, lending and selling of games will be permitted, and purchasing a game means that it is owned by the consumer forever.

Playstation Plus will be required in order to play online games. All single-player games and media services will still function without PS+.

At its E3 press briefing, Sony confirmed that PlayStation 4 will require PlayStation Plus will be required in order to play games online. This is similar to Microsoft's current approach to online gaming with Xbox Live Gold. Sony also confirmed that you'll be able to play all single-player games as well as use all media services without subscribing to PS+. Your current PS3 membership will transfer over to PS4.

Sony dropped a megaton announcement tonight when it revealed that the PlayStation 4 would cost $399 — $100 less than Microsoft's Xbox One — but what exactly does MSRP net you? In addition to the specs detailed in February, Sony has confirmed that the PS4 will ship with a 500GB hard drive, putting it toe-to-toe with Microsoft.

What's more, Sony isn't ruling out the possibility of producing additional models. In a post-event interview, SCEA president Andrew House told IGN that the company hasn't finalized its plans for the range of SKUs it will offer. House noted the success the company has found with game and accessory bundles, though it's unclear if the company is also considering larger storage capacities.

This news has been revealed by Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Worldwide Studios, on Twitter: Shuhei Yoshida - "And yes, PS4 is region free "

This news means games bought in or imported from any region will play on any PlayStation 4 console. This contrasts with Microsoft's decision to region-lock the Xbox One.

Additional details about the PlayStation 4 have begun to emerge following last night's announcements. In addition to be region-free, we've now learned that that the system's 500GB hard drive can be removed and upgraded. Sony Worldwide Studio Head, Shuhei Yoshida, confirmed the news via Twitter early this morning. The move gives the PS4 yet another advantage over the Xbox One, which makes the hard drive inaccessible to consumers.

What remains unclear, however, is whether the system will use a standard notebook hard drive, like the kind used by the PS3 or a proprietary storage format. We've reached out to Sony representatives for clarification.

Sony has confirmed that the digital rights management of PlayStation 4 software will be up to third-party publishers. Speaking on GTTV, Sony's Jack Tretton stated, "The DRM decision for third-party games will be up to publishers."

This clarification comes one day after Sony's E3 press conference this week, where Tretton stated that the PlayStation 4 "won't pose any new restrictions on the use of PS4 gamers." He continued, "We believe in the model that people embrace today with PlayStation 3."

Publishers of PS4 games, then, can do what's already done on existing PlayStation software: Limit or lock content behind online passes or redemption codes (or opt out of restrictions altogether), which differs from Microsoft's limited licensing of Xbox One software.

Unfortunately no. Lack of backwards compatibility was announced back in February during the Sony PS4 reveal conference. Next-gen simply won't be backwards compatible.

Bummer, I was hoping they had changed their stance on that one. That was the one thing that would have made me get one on launch day. Now I'll just wait to finish playing the stack of PS3 games I have before moving on to 4.
