Crawler......be damn sure you want to go down this road before you actually do...
1st question....would you be "collecting" based off characters and artists you like....or "investing" for value retention and growth purposes?

Depends on what character you like and what artist , IMO , Jim Lee makes nice sketches nowadays and can be found on Ebay , I saw nice Tim Sale convention sketches from forum member monster , Lee Bermejo , Tim Bradstreet , Adam Hughes (Women sketches !!) and ofcourse Gabriele Dell'Otto but very hard to find !!
Saw some Ed Mcguinness pages on Ebay too , they're pretty affordable .

Good choice with non-investing and getting characters you like. I often try to get art for characters I like by people who've worked on the book. Sometimes that's difficult, then I try to find an artist who's style would be a fit for the character. Overall, art is subjective, there are artist who are loved I wouldn't pay a dime for there work. Due to eBay prices have really climbed for sketch/commision work. If you're going to hang it on your wall it's sometimes a plus to get a commisioned piece vs. Con piece as more time will go into it if the artist can work on it at home (not always). Good luck!
