the indoor shots were set to ISO 800 but when i went outdoors the shutter speed changed to various speeds (last two were 400 and 320). camera is set to AV.
edit: actually, i found one pic at 500 ISO indoors.
hmmm.. i always thought the shutter speed was fixed once you set it.

yes. all of these handheld test shots were in AV mode. the shutter speed changed. i guess the camera compensated according to the light available?

that's exactly right. my understanding is that one uses the AV mode to control dof, while the camera compensates for proper exposure

btw Mandragora, do you shoot manual outdoors when the situation is fast? i'm just wondering if you have time to set up the proper exposures. i'd be afraid of missing an important moment.

actually, for "everyday" stuff, i take my powershot out and shoot everything auto . .. like for all my nieces and nephews running around. but when i do take treks outside with the rebel i use manual and will set up the exposure for the light conditions (bright sunny, cloudy, etc) as soon as i get outside. so if i see something and need it real fast i have it. but if i have more time i'll usually take a set and shift the exposure up two and down two.

P1x4R, in AV mode, the camera will adjust the shutter speed accordingly. That's why you need to be careful, if you set your 50mm f1.2 to f1.2 and then go outside in the sunlight, you're gonna see 8000 flashing in the viewfinder. In other words, the camera needs a faster shutter speed than 1/8000 but can't get it, so it'll blink to tell you that it's gonna be overexposed at that aperture and shutter speed combo. In P mode, it would wind up finding a compromise, something like f11 @ 1/1250 or something.

Also P1X4R, have you gone to Blu Ray or HD DVD? I got a Toshiba HD DVD player, and about 10 discs, but I'm afraid that with the latest announcement from Warner Bros, I'm going to wind up with a bunch of HD DVD laser discs laying around, if you know what I mean.
