Photographing Statues: Camera or Phone

I am constantly impressed by the amazing pics of statues / collections I see in the forum.

Would like to know from the members: What do you use to shoot your statues (in 2023) - A DSLR / Mirrorless camera or your Phone?

Camera - Sony Cyber-shot 7.2 mega pixels
Phone - Samsung S22

The camera is quite old. The optical zoom lens is better than the small lens on the phone.
While the camera produces clear pixels compared to the phone (which tend to look smudgy when you zoom in on them)
the phone produces brighter more colorful images.

Ideally i should look into buying a better camera. Fact is, i am not into photography nearly enough.
For the sake of shooting statues/figures, some of my photo's come out decent enough.

Samsung phone

I haven't used an actual camera in at least a decade. The phone cameras tend to be pretty impressive as well as convenient.

I've been a hobby photographer for over 30 years. Mainly insects and birds.
For photographing my statue I use my DSLR and usually a 100 macro lens

I too still have my old Sony Cybershot; I don't use it, though. A nice point & shoot. Moved to Nikon Coolpix S6000. After that, it was always my phone. +1 on not being into photography that much, and I too am looking into buying my first nice camera.

A friend suggested either Nikon D3500 or Nikon D5600; basically, entry level DSLRs. Or, if one would like to spend a bit more, then Sony ZV E10 or Canon M50 mirrorless cameras.

Wow! That's a long time! If one really knows how to shoot proper pictures, a phone should be enough I believe.

Great pics, Asgard! I am not sure about the 100 macro lens. My friend suggested that my first lens could be a 50mm (if its just for clicking statues / indoors). Then later, I could start experimenting with 35mm and 85mm. I am not really sure if that's the best advice. Would like to know your thoughts on it.

Thank you

50mm is good for landscape or indoor or street photography.
You can also use it to photograph statues, but you have to be careful that the motif is not distorted.
In my opinion, 100mm and above gives a better result.

I use a studio setup with Elinchrom material (RX4 lights with modifiers) for light.

As a camera my D810 with a 105mm macro lens.

I my equipment for other (dance and studio, urbex...) photography too:

EDIT: macro function is important for statues, since it allows you to get really close with still the option of getting focus. Other long distance lenses have the same 'zoom' value but don't allow you to get close focus, with means less close up.
