Guides on building custom bases?

Does anyone here have a guide or link to one for building customer bases for statues with unreasonably large bases and excess footprints?

I'm a newb at doing such. I'm generally the guy who occasionally buys something because I like how it looks and generally doesn't sell things. I recently purchased a Prime 1 rogue alien diorama, but the diorama base takes far too much space for my liking. It has the square peg plug-ins with the metal spike, and I'd like to make a simple black base that takes up much less space.

My biggest concern is avoiding any materials that might react badly and potentially damage the statue itself. I figure that many people around here have had such issues with other statue bases, and there is likely a how-to guide somewhere on the forum. Thank you for any advice or links.
