Meh. Looks to have none of the charm and style of the original series. Why end that prematurely for this? I’ll give it a shot but I’m not optimistic.

Well, prematurely to fans who wanted more but not to the creator, he only wanted 3 seasons. He also said he was done with A Penny Dreadful but came back to it because he found something he wanted to explore but not in the same time period.

I only say prematurely because the conclusion felt so abrupt, even forced. This new series seems to be Penny Dreadful in name only. Feels more like he’s trying to prop it up off the original’s success. I’ll be surprised if it ties into it in a natural way.

Anyone else watch the first episode? It was pretty good. Very different from the first series.

Do you need to see the first few seasons to watch this new one?

Think I’m gonna wait this series out and see how it’s received before jumping in.

Yes I did, and yes very different. Still entrenched in "folklore" and old religion, but the themes and of course the time period/location are very different.

Well it's only been one episode but from what I can tell, no, The first three season tell one story and this is very much another with entirely different set of characters.

I agree with Josh, so far at least, in the first episode there is nothing to gain from watching the first series.

Been DVRing this and just watched the first two. Really enjoying it.

Really loved the first season until the last episode which was a colossal disappointment. Hope this one keeps the quality storytelling going through to the end.

Just finished this season and it blows season 1 away, IMHO. The political undercurrents to the final episode may take some out of it but, to me, they were so hard hitting and consistent with the themes of this season it just left me saying, “Wow!” I hope there’s a third season.
