Well the silver lining with this is, that the base set will actually hold value! Unlike the previous Masterpieces where you can get a complete base set on ebay for less than 10 bucks! Think how discouraging it must be for Joe to see his work from 1992 selling for less than 10 bucks for a full set!

Other than wish fulfilment, what exactly are you basing that assertion on?

Yeah, he was paid by Upper Deck, plus he sold the original paintings for a fortune. I don't think he's very concerned. And base sets should be cheap. Chase cards should be the expensive, hard to find items. I don't buy the cards as an investment. I buy them to enjoy. Short printing on some of the base cards are going to make it impossible to get a complete set, and the price point is going to discourage fans of Joe's work from even attempting it.

I went to a general store. They wouldn't let me buy anything specifically.

I don't get your question... people are saying how hard/expensive it will be to put together a complete base set. So why would it not hold value if complete sets are going to be hard to come by?

Just because something is expensive to come by does not mean it will automatically hold value nor does it automatically mean people have presented a willingness to spend that kind of cash. I think you may have read a bit too much into some of the posts. JMO

Well said. Down the road i doubt these trading cards in this day n age will hold the value it cost to complete. Nostalgia has got our interest, 24 years ago it was a different game. I might just buy a few packs just to bring back that old feeling.

all people care about (for the majority) these days, are the chase cards, the sketches. Base sets come second

I just spoke with my LCS and he said that unless someone special orders a box (not one person has, so far), he's not going to carry it. Oh well. I was curious to see what the cards look like -- however, it seems the cards may be too cost prohibitive, it's scaring some owners and fans away.
