The closest I've known is I have a friend who's into the 'Society for Creative Anachronism'. All I know about cosplay it is what I see on youtube.

Japan v America it seems. The not so good was pretty scary. It takes some courage to dress up and, apparently, a lot of ability to put together a decent costume.
