Thats cause basketball players are pvssies. The NBA need to protect their investment. Meanwhile their players sit out of games with hangnails and migraines...

It's a physical game and you have skilled players who are so far ahead of the avg player.
Some of the not so skilled players may want to take out say Steve Yzerman giving thier team a better shot to win.
If you had to answer to one of these guys it normally would deter getting that person from getting rough with your best player.
Even Wayne Gretzky had a bodyguard, Marty McSorley was there with Gretzky in Edmonton, and even got traded to the Kings to protect Gretzky there.
Fighting isn't a part of the game like it once was.

Fighting allows players to settle scores so that people don't really get hurt (well, usually anyway) by getting run into boards and chopped with sticks and slashed with skates.
If you know you can just fight a guy, you won't necessarily do these other things. You'll just punch him in the face. Settle it, take the penalty, and the game continues.

You also know that if you fight, youre going to the box...and guys ultimately want to play. Not too often are you gonna find 1st and 2nd line guys brawling...not a lot anyway...or frontline guys...
