But it would have had a big chip and cracks making it still broken. Making it solid doesn't make it magically immune to taking damage, just structurally stronger. However if the structure isn't compromised it doesn't really make a lot of difference because a similar amount of damage would have occurred.

There's no reason for the base being cast that thin, other than to save a few bucks in material. I'm guessing the factory did so at their discretion.
I agree with you that solid casting introduces other problems as you describe, but cast the base 2-3 times thicker, with some kind of structural skeleton inside it would probably have prevented that type of breakage.

I wouldn't say it's at their descrtion, fair chance Jerry knew about it.
And I'm not disputing that it would prevent that type of breakage, however it would not have prevent damage. Instead of a hole you would have just had a big ass chip and some smaller ones. It still would have been a useless base that would need to be replaced. Again the structure integrity of the base is not compromised. It didn't collapse or anything so having a skeleton would have actually done nothing from a hole being poked into it. I'm more inclined to foam fill bases, but for different reasons not relating to damage.
