Where to begin

I have just started to take an interest in sculpting and was wondering if any of you know of any good books for starting off. I would like to try my hand at the whole process (sculpt, mold, cast, and paint) but just in a good reference material. If you have any suggestions or know of another thread with this information I would appreciate it.

hello

I can recommend three good books;

1- Popsculpture by Tim Bruckner - shows whole process from rough to wax to resin.
2- Sculpting Lifelike figures in Polymerclay by Katherine Dewey. A good book on use of sculpey, fimo, etc. with lots of proportional diagrams to get you started.
3- Sculpting the figure in Clay by Bruno Lucchesi. A good anatomy book where you can see it in clay as he sculpts rather than confusing line drawings which look like spaghetti when you start out..... lol.

and forums like From Our Bench where you can show and tell and ask for advice.

all the best and happy clay pushing -- tim.

you are most welcome. If can help you, then it's a pleasure.
Especially pitfalls to avoid and how to save money on tools and stuff which we all went nuts on when starting out.

Oh and another good Book is;

Drawing-Cutting-Edge-Anatomy for comics.

This will help you not to overly focus on the small stuff. When we start out we often zero in on the Inside to out approach; I know I did.
Drawing characters like this will help you look at the big shapes first and then work in to them to create detail which is the most effective method of sculpture. Though it took a few years at first to realise that.
Anyhoo, hope this will help ya.
