Lava Lamp base for heating Castilene?
I am thinking of trying to use my lava lamp base as a heater to heat my Castilene while trying to work on a piece..
I am thinking of just taking off the glass lava part and putting a metal or glass bowl in it's place..
Has anyone ever tried this? I am new to Castilene.. just got it and kind of perplexed by it..

Never tried that. I think John C uses a heat lamp and that works fine too... I myself just use the tried and true microwave and heat and reheat. It may be dull and not very clever but I have never had any problems that way 
It should work but I have no idea how hot lava lamps are and it may liquify it???

I was worried about it being too hot too.. but I am thinking I can just switch the light on and off if it is. I'll try it out.

You can get coffee mug warmers at walmart for $5. Throw the wax in a mug and put it on the warmer. If you need more heat, or faster service , put 60watt bendy lamp above and heat from top and bottom !

I'd need to double check, but I believe you're not supposed to use a metal container to heat waxes. Otherwise I think there are a number of good solutions here.

Does anyone know a good website to buy Castilene in the UK.
I want to start using decent materials, and was going to start trying first sculpts in ss then detailed masters in Castilene (unless this is the wrong approach)

Don't know about where to buy in the UK, but I would try http://www.sculpt.com/ in New York. If the shipping isn't exorbitant, their prices are good and they have (or can get) anything you'd need. Also, the UK to US exchange rate will work in your favor.

I tried a ceramic bowl on top of my lava lamp base and it didn't work. The bottom gets too hot and melts the bottom of the Castilene too much.
I just put the bendy desk lamp over my slab of castilene and just scrape of a little bit of castilene as I go.. works great. Couldn't be simpler really. I really love this stuff. I haven't figured out how to get a ultra smooth finish on it.. but even if you have to recast it in a different material to get the final finish it is worth it to me.
