Question Does anyone in the US have auto insurance anymore???

I ask sarcastically, but I swear, every time I hear of someone being in a collision, it seems that the other driver is uninsured. Supposedly, we need insurance in order to buy cars, rent cars, get inspections, get license tags, etc., but from what I see, none of this is taken very seriously by either the public or the government; otherwise, why all the uninsured drivers?

Can someone familiar with the whole auto insurance game clarify this?
