Selling Statues: Shipping vs Checked Luggage?

With issues with scammers when selling statues online, I was thinking about whether it is safer to sell via FedEx with full insurance or to take a flight to meet the buyer with the statue in checked luggage so that the sale could be done in person. Seems like direct flights would be the safest in preventing misplaced luggage issues.

Has anyone had any experience brining statues in checked luggage?

I do this in Australia a lot, I'm fortunate that I travel quite a bit for work and frequently visit Sydney & Melbourne. I scour ebay and Facebook for good deals and will pick up to save on costs. I just check in the box as luggage and don't get charged as long as its under a certain weight. Works out really well, and makes my business trips a lot more exciting.
