I believe it was Captain America's idea for her to dump the name Ms. Marvel and become Captain Marvel. It had become very apparent that unlike every other Marvel hero who died, Mar-Vell was not coming back.

Beyond generic cosmic powers, Captain Marvel had a "cosmic awareness". Carol Danvers had variation of that ability called a "sixth sense", but that hasn't been mentioned in several years so it may be gone now. Marvel wikia can do a better job of giving you any info you need:

Not so sure about Angelina Jolie, she doesn't have a fantastic track record as a director, although I do like her as an actor.

Also I'm not sure why they're specifically looking for a female director. The gender of the director really has got nothing to do with the quality of the resulting movie.

When they state it like that it comes across as trying to score public relation points and trying to convince women to go see it via advertising it as a female directed movie.

I would rather they simply chose a female director based on her being the best available director for the movie.
