Now that I think about it, the other way would be to spin it on a turn table. Has anybody done sculpey or Apoxie Sculpt on a clay wheel? Is there a diy mini version of that? Where is the ghost of Patrick Swayze?

I use sculpey for all my bases but none of the sculpey bases are round. However, you can just achieve that by placing something circular over the sculpey to get that shape. Then removing the item and then baking it. After its baked add the sculpt or other details on top and bake again.
For the record I too use wood for my round bases, you can make it look very shiney and smooth with the right paint and wood.
